The Impact of Art
Being able to express yourself through the format of art provides a positive experience for people of all ages. For the elderly, the impact may be even greater considering some of the limitations that many face in nursing homes and assisted living centers. In such environments where seniors may have less say in their activities due to the advancement of age and the limitations their bodies now place on them, the expressive forms of the arts provide a method to release their inner creativity in a positive way.
Creation: Art is a creative process where the elderly can use paints, clay, and other materials to create works of art. There is something very satisfying about creating something from the imagination which in turn provides a true sense of satisfaction. Art provides the outlet for so many seniors to express themselves in their own way.
Expression: The expression of art comes across on many different levels. The beauty of art is that expression lies at the heart which requires little in the way of physical prowess to achieve. If there is movement that a person can control, there is a way to express their artistic nature which can be quite healthy.
Accomplishment: With children, their works of art are often posted on the refrigerator or other prominent area in the home. For the elderly in nursing homes, what they create can also be put on display either in public or in their rooms as a reminder of what they created on their own.
Benefits of Art for the Elderly
Besides the feeling of creating something new that everyone can see, there are actual benefits for seniors who participate in art classes and sessions on a regular basis.
- Greater use of the mind and body
- Allows for better expression and reception of ideas
- Provides a positive experience that can be looked forward to in the future
As someone pushes themselves to be more creative, they also use their mind and body in a more active manner. Just as the muscles need exercise to stay in shape, so too does the mind need to be challenged to stay active. The result are experiences that the elderly look forward to having again which provides them with a greater sense of wellbeing. To have something waiting for them in the future that they will enjoy offers greater happiness and hope.
So, it’s no surprise that many assisted living and nursing homes provide art classes so that the elderly can better express their creativity and lead happier, healthier lives.
